Managing Your
Building Process
Take time to view and tour different homes so you know which styles and floor plans are most appealing to you. Attend local open houses or spend a weekend at a Tour of Homes offered in larger cities or the HBA Tour of homes. It is much easier to understand and get the feel of overall house square footage and room sizes when you walk through a variety of homes.
Keep a file of photographs and design ideas that you would like to incorporate on the interior and exterior of your home. This will not only ensure a more complete, accurate estimate and contractor bid, it will help Simonson Lumber and your builder locate products customized to your personal taste, budget and style.
Spend at least 3 to 6 months fine tuning your floor plan before the actual building process is initiated. Making changes after the building process has begun will increase costs and may cause delays in your building timeline. If you are planning and building a home with another person, this timeframe also allows you to come to terms and agree to details that will suit both people’s needs.
Select and order materials ahead of schedule to ensure your home building project progresses smoothly. Your contractor will supply you with a timetable to order your homebuilding and finishing products.
Be sure that both you and your builder clearly understand your desired outcome for your home. Ongoing communication with your contractor is vital to the timely and satisfactory completion of your new home.
